LivingDNA has an autosomal DNA database of over 300,000 and allows users to upload DNA test results from other companies.

Matches are free, but there is a fee to access the biogeographical ancestry reports. However, Y-DNA and mtDNA reports are not included. LivingDNA provides biogeographical regions for 150 global regions, including 72 in Africa and 19 in Britain. The pros of LivingDNA include its detailed breakdown of British ancestry at the county level. 23andMe DNA

Cost vary - but ranges between $70 - $99 USD.

The database size is over 12.8 million, but you cannot upload DNA test results from other companies to the database. There are over 2,000 global regions represented in the biogeographical report, with the best representation for people with Asian ancestry. The Y-DNA and mtDNA deep ancestry reports include a Neanderthal ancestry report.

One of the pros of the 23andMe test is the interesting traits report, and the large database means that you are likely to find many matches. However, a majority of matches have not included a family tree, making it difficult to work out how people are connected to you. The test offers a wide range of well-written and attractively presented reports, including detailed Y-DNA and mtDNA reports for deep ancestry purposes, and it is the only company with authorisation from the FDA to offer health reports direct to the consumer.

MyHeritage DNA test

The database size for MyHeritage DNA is 5.8 million, and it allows you to upload DNA test results from other companies for free. However, there is a n additional fee to access matches' biogeographical ancestry reports and DNA analysis tools. MyHeritage DNA offers 42 global regions and 2114 sub-regional groups for biogeographical regions, but ancient/deep ancestry is not available.

One of the pros of MyHeritage DNA is that it provides good representation of non-English-speaking countries in the database, making it an ideal choice for those looking to make connections in these regions. It also offers useful tools for advanced users, such as Theories of Relativity, autoclusters, and a chromosome browser.

On the downside, MyHeritage DNA requires an ongoing subscription to access its full features. The free MyHeritage service has restricted tree-building and matching facilities. For enhanced features, such as the ability to search trees, smart matches, and instant discoveries, you need to purchase an enhanced family tree subscription.
